Buenos Aires on a Budget: How to Experience the Paris of South America for Less
By The Trip Window
Buenos Aires is one of the world's great cities — grand European architecture, world-class steak, passionate tango, and a nightlife that doesn't even start until midnight. Best of all? It's surprisingly affordable for the savvy traveler.
Where to Stay
The neighborhoods of Palermo and San Telmo offer the best mix of character and value. Boutique hostels and Airbnbs are plentiful and excellent quality. Avoid Puerto Madero — it's priced for expense accounts.
Eating Well for Less
Skip the tourist-facing parrillas on Florida Street and head to where locals eat. A tenedor libre (all-you-can-eat) lunch buffet costs just a few dollars and is often spectacular. Empanadas from street bakeries are a budget staple.
Free Things to Do
Wander the colourful La Boca neighbourhood, watch a free tango performance in San Telmo's Sunday market, and stroll Recoleta Cemetery — one of the most beautiful (and free) attractions in the city.
Getting Around
The SUBE card covers all buses and the subte (metro) at a fraction of taxi prices. Buenos Aires is also very walkable — Palermo alone could fill a full day on foot.
