Patagonia Packing Guide: What to Bring for the End of the World

Patagonia is one of the most spectacular wilderness destinations on earth — and also one of the most demanding on your gear. Get your kit wrong and you'll be miserable. Get it right and you'll have the adventure of a lifetime.

The Golden Rule: Layers

Forget packing a single heavy jacket. The key to Patagonia is a layering system: moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer (down or fleece), and a waterproof, windproof outer shell. You'll add and remove layers constantly throughout the day.

Footwear

Waterproof hiking boots are non-negotiable for trails like the W Trek or Torres del Paine circuit. Break them in thoroughly before you go — blisters at the end of the world are a nightmare.

Essential Kit

Trekking poles, a high-quality sleeping bag rated to at least -5°C, a headlamp with spare batteries, and a robust 60L+ backpack are essential. A dry bag or pack cover is vital — rain arrives without warning.

What NOT to Bring

Leave the fashion items at home. Jeans are useless when wet (and they will get wet). Cotton in general is your enemy in Patagonia. Stick to merino wool and synthetic fabrics throughout.
